Assistant Instructors WANTED
We are NOW Recruiting!

We are super excited to see a new cohort of Assistant Instructors come through!

The WORD Assistant Instructors rock our world! These incredible 14-16 year olds assist the Instructors for the term programmes and holiday camps. They help the Instructor with group management, demonstrations, trail building, bike maintenance, and passing out snacks.

As a WORD Assistant Instructor, you'll support our Instructors during the after-school programmes and camps! You'll share your skills in MTB, trail building, bike maintenance, and teamwork, encouraging an environment of respect, support, and fun.

If you're passionate about mountain biking, love working with kids, and are eager to make a positive impact, we want to hear from you!

If you know a young person who is at least 14 years-old and wanting to become an Assistant Instructor, they are now able to apply online!
Meet Rob! - Wānaka's New Programme Manager

As Wānaka is slowly emerging from the snow, we are super stoked to have found the perfect new Programme Manager for WORD Wānaka! Rob has lived many live...bikes, snow, gumboots and government. With 8 seasons as a skiing instructor in his pocket, he is no stranger to outdoor instructing . In his previous life, Rob also worked as a dairy farmer and in environmental land management. He is also known for his terrible dad jokes, much to the delight of his kiddos Freddie (8yo) and Mabel (6yo). After living in many places across the country (including Wellington and Rotorua), Rob and his wonderful family have settled in Wānaka for the love of the great outdoors and adventure.
WORD Instructors Getting Pro

WORD being a coaching organisation, we truly believe in giving opportunities to our instructors to keep learning and progressing in the coaching journey to become THE Best instructors in all the land! We are so thankful for Nic Johsnon MTB Coach to have kindly accepted to spend time with some of our instructors and make them become super pro! We covered teaching methods, fundamental riding techniques, session management and more!

Nic Johnson and WORD are the only Worksafe Adventure Activities Accredited mountain bike coaches (we look after the kids, Nic takes care of the adults) in the Wellington region. Nic offers tailored courses and private lessons focused on bike setup, cornering, and jumps, catering to all skill levels from beginners to advanced riders. A session with Nic could be the little fix you need if you feel you're starting to struggle keeping up with your young shredder(s)!

Kia Ora koutou!

It may not feel quite like it right now, but we're officially passed the halfway mark of Winter and yes, Spring is on the horizon. With the arrival of Spring come MTB trips, events, October Holidays, oh and Term 4 WORD after school programmes! Yay!

As we are hoping to see lots of kids come back to WORD and new faces appear, we are on the hunt for more instructors! If you're stoked about bikes and the community and keen to help young people become good riders and great humans, we want to hear from you! Read below for more details and how to apply.

Before we know it, we'll have our new fleet sorted and will be getting onto October Holidays and After School Programmes! Keep an eye on our socials and website for schedules and bookings opening.

Big news on the Leadership Team...

After a year as the National Operations Manager/Mr. Fix It, Mat is heading onto a new role! Over the past year Mat jumped into every situation we had and said 'yep, I got this'. From t-shirt sorting (those tie-dyes are so rad!), organising the Thumb-raiser ($6k raised?!), to then filling in as the Wellington Programme Manager (until we found our unicorn, Claudia!).

Mat new role is with Kiwi Community Assistance, a non profit who rescue & redistribute around 32 tons of food monthly, along with approximately 500 banana boxes of non-food items. These essentials are then provided to frontline agencies directly serving those in need.

I am so grateful to Mat for all of his ideas, big mahi, and support. While we knew we couldn't keep Mat forever, I'm so grateful we had this time together. We'll still see Mat around as an Instructor at WORD, wahoo!

WORD people doing cool things - Manawa is going to Greece!

WORD's mission is to foster an environment where young people can grow into independant humans, make their own choices responsibly and gain a sense for adventure. And it makes us so happy when we see it all come together! For the last year Manawa has been busy with school, a couple of part-time jobs, fundraising and learning a new language for his 4 months exchange in Greece where he'll be thrown deep into a different culture.

Manawa has been part of the WORD Whānau since he was 13 years-old. After a couple of years riding with WORD, he became Assistant Instructor and more recently a fully trained Instructor! "WORD has allowed me to develop myself more as a person, helped me gain more confidence and leadership skills through teaching my own group"

We are super lucky to have Manawa within our fleet, we wish him the best time in Greece (we're not jealous at all) and can't wait to hear all about it when he returns!

It's still summer in the northern hemisphere...Ash's next stop on the USA Study Tour of youth mountain bike organisations - Minneapolis, Minnesota?!

We have a winner!

We had an absolute blast at B.Social for the Yeti 160e bike raffle.... For those of you that missed it on our socials, the winner of the amazing Yeti 160e is Geoff of Wānaka!

'I'm just gobsmacked! I've never even won a meat raffle' ~ Geoff when he heard the news.

A massive thanks to everyone who purchased a ticket! With your generous support, we raised almost $30,000 for WORD! This is by far our biggest fundraiser of the year and will go a long way to helping us keeping costs low and supporting more young people to ride bikes with us at WORD.

We are forever grateful to Yeti NZDropping InnB.Social, and JRA for making this incredible raffle happen!

Kia Ora koutou and Happy Matariki!

I hope you all had a great long weekend surrounded by Whanau and friends! It was so good to have the sun shining for our Matariki Whanau Ride on Friday! Mat, Dave and our team of wonderful instructors were super stoked to welcome 80 people for fun laps, good chats and delicious sizzles! Thank you so much to all who joined us, it is so heartwarming to see a community coming together!

Unfortunately I missed out on the Whanau Ride since I was already booked on a big gang trip to Rotorua (not so unfortunate actually) with a dozen of my Welly riding friends! How cool is it to think that mountain biking makes people "ageless"!? Or sort of...Surely I'm not the only one, but when I sit on my bike, it's like if I were 12 years-old again and all I want is to go play bikes with my friends until the sun goes down! We spent three days doing laps on laps on laps in the Whakarewarewa Forest and I'm pretty sure we could all have kept going for another three days! I guess we could say it was like a WORD holiday camp, but for adults?

Speaking of WORD holiday camps, in a week from now young riders will be dropped off for their first day of camp and I really hope they leave hungry for more when they get picked up to go home. If you've been on the fence with wether or not joining the holiday camps, it's not too late, there are still a few spots available for boy and girls of all abilities! Schedule and availabilities are listed below and you can read more on our website.

See you out on the trails and Ngā Mihi,

Claudia and the WORD Whanau!

Thank you for your support!

WORD being a charity, we rely on participant fees, grants and donations to keep our operations running. We cannot be thankful enough for all the kind and generous souls out there who keep supporting us year after year, helping us get more tamariki and rangatahi into the outdoors and saving the world one ride at a time! This month, we are especially thankful for three of our awesome friendly bike shops, big Aroha to you all!
  • Get Lost Cycling has donated $1000 worth of fancy parts for us to sell with all proceeds going straight into our operational costs.
  • FS Cycles has put together a set of two evening mechanic workshops at a very low price for our teenage participants and instructors. These will be held on 9 and 16 of July and there are still two spots available if you're interested. Book Here
  • My Ride Wellington, thank you for constantly spreading the WORD (pun intended) and for always supporting everything we do!

WORD people doing cool things! - Emma Bateup

The WORD Whanau is full of wonderful individuals who make our organisation what is! Therefore we’d like to showcase some of the amazing and exciting things our people get up to!

At the end of this month our very awesome Emma Bateup will be jumping on a plane to Denver, Colorado and embark on what will be just another one of her epic adventures : The Colorado Trail Race. The CTR is a fully self-supported race spanning over 850km with a mere 24 000m of climbing (that’s about 3 Everests!) from Denver to Durango. Participants traverse through high alpine terrain, dense forests, rocky passes, and challenging mountain climbs. The trail is primarily singletrack, demanding constant attention and skillful navigation. Emma’s first goal is to simply finish the race, however, should everything be going well, she believes she could break the women’s record curently set at 5 days, 1hr, 53min. Dot watchers, you’ll be able to follow Emma’s progression on Trackleaders. Good luck Emma, the whole WORD team knows you'll totally crush it!

Bentonville, it's a whirlwind

If you’ve never heard of Bentonville, then you’re in for a treat. Like most people in Bentonville, they have/are working for the $546 billion dollar(?!) Walmart corporation. Over the past 2 decades, The Walton Foundation have donated over $75 million dollars to build and maintain trails (and cycling infrastructure) to make Bentonville into a mountain bike destination. How much? Well…'the foundation supported the construction of 208 miles of natural-surface trails and 72 miles of multi-use paved paths’. Each year over 100,000 people visit the region bringing in over $140 million in economic returns… sounds like a good investment if you ask me. Read more about Ash's adventure in Bentonville!
